Christmas Sugar Cookies

An old fashioned sugar cookie recipe that I've been making for 40 years.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tarter
  • 1 cup flour, plus more for rolling
  • assorted cookie cutters
  • 1 to 2 cans classic vanilla frosting
  • assorted sprinkles

Instructions

  • Cream together sugar and shortening, add vanilla and eggs. Mix together dry ingredients. Add milk and dry ingredients, alternately to the creamed mixture. Roll dough out on floured surface and knead in extra flour as needed. Use assorted cookie cutters, and cut out shapes. Place shapes on baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Cool cookies on wire rack.
  • When cool, frost cookies, decorate with sprinkles

Note: I have always used canned frosting, Pillsbury or Duncan Hills
