Outdoor Cooking with Pie Irons

A pie iron is an extremely versatile tool to use for cooking over an open fire. You can use a pie iron to make breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. Meal options are endless. With a little creativity, you can make just about anything with a pie iron. Check out the eight recipes that we have shared with you here today. Important!

The most important thing to remember when using your iron is to butter your bread well…especially the side that will be placed against the inside of the pie iron. Another option is to spray the inside of your pie iron well with non-stick cooking spray. A word of caution: Do Not spray the non-stick cooking spray towards the open fire. The can might explode and the non-stick cooking stream could catch fire.

Camping

Camping and camp fires go together like bread and butter or beer and pretzels. Here in the north woods outdoor cooking, camping, campfires and a pie iron go together. We like our s’mores but we are equally found of our pudgy pies too. Making pudgy pies using a pie iron is fun, easy, versatile and a delicious way to make meals outdoors. Your kids will love these “pies” and they’ll have fun helping you make them and eat them too.

These 8 pie iron recipes make great campfire cooking treats and meals.


Stuffed French Toast

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick Texas toast bread
  • maple  syrup, powdered sugar
  • canned apple pie filling
  • eggs
  • 1/2 to 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • dash of pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons flour

Cooking Directions

  1. In a large bowl whisk all ingredients together.
  2. Spray pie irons (4) well with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Dip 8 slices of thick Texas toast bread into egg batter.
  4. Place dipped bread slices into prepared pie irons.
  5. Add a thin layer of maple syrup on one slice of bread and 1 or 2 tablespoons canned apple pie filling on other slice. Close pie iron and cook over a fire until golden brown.
  6. Serve with additional maple syrup and sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

 


Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwiches

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 4 thin slices cheese
  • 4 thin slices ham
  • dab of mustard

Cooking Directions

  1. Spray (4) pie irons with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Line pie irons with bread, spread one slice of bread with mustard.
  3. Layer cheese and ham slices on bread, close pie irons and cook over a fire until golden brown.

Monte Cristo Sandwiches

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 4 thin slices ham
  • 4 thin slices roast turkey breast
  • 4 thin slices Gouda or Swiss cheese
  • 4 tablespoons raspberry or blackberry jam
  • eggs
  • 1/2 to 1 cup milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • pinch of black pepper

Cooking Directions

  1. In a large bowl whisk together all batter ingredients.
  2. Spray pie irons (4) with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Dip bread into egg batter and place into prepared pie irons.
  4. Spread jam or jelly on bread slices.
  5. Layer with ham, roasted turkey breast and cheese.
  6. Close pie irons and cook over a fire until golden brown.

 

Pizza Pies

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices what white bread
  • pizza  sauce
  • pepperoni, shredded cheese, mushrooms, chopped onions, green pepper, pineapple, bacon

Cooking Directions

  1. Spray (4) pie irons with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Lay bread slices in prepared pie irons, top with pizza sauce and toppings of your choice.
  3. Close pie iron, cook over a fire until golden brown.
  4. Serve with additional pizza sauce.

Apple or Cherry Pie

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 1 (21 oz) can apple pie or cherry pie filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
  • maple  syrup, optional

Cooking Directions

  1. Spray 4 pie irons with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Lay bread slices in prepared pie irons.
  3. Spread a few tablespoons of apple or cherry pie filling on bread sprinkle with ground cinnamon, omit for cherry, drizzle with maple syrup, omit for cherry.
  4. Close pie irons and cook over a fire until golden brown.

Fat Elvis Pie

 

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 4 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 or 2 sliced bananas
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Cooking Directions

  1. Spray 4 pie irons with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Lay bread slices in prepared pie irons.
  3. Spread bread slices with peanut butter.
  4. Lay banana slices on one slice of bread.
  5. Top banana’s with mini chocolate chips.
  6. Close pie irons and cook over a fire until golden brown.

 

S’mores in a Pie Iron


Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread
  • 4 crushed graham crackers
  • toasted marshmallows
  • 4 tablespoons Hershey’s chocolate spread

Cooking Directions

  1. Spray 4 pie irons with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Lay bread slices in prepared pie irons.
  3. Sprinkle one slice of bread with crushed graham crackers.
  4. Toast 2 marshmallow over fire, place toasted marshmallows on graham crackers.
  5. Spread the other slice of bread with Hershey’s spreads.
  6. Close pie irons and cook over a fire until golden brown.
