The Paczki Tradition…

The excerpt below comes from the side of the box that my four apricot filled Paczki came in. This was the first time that I have ever eaten or purchased Paczki and it will certainly not be my last. I can certainly understand what all the hoopla is all about! Paczki are delicious and I would stand in line too, to get my hands on some more of these yummy doughnuts.

I can only imagine what they taste like warm from the bakery oven….I bought my Paczki at my local grocery store for only $2.99 for four Paczki. I guess I’m going to have to go back to the store and buy me some more!

“For hundreds of years in my beloved Poland, my countrymen have been celebrating the arrival of Lent by making Paczki (Punch-key).These delicious, jelly filled dough balls are made from the finest ingredients and are covered with several types of sugar or glaze. For Fat Tuesday (Ostatki), the day before Ash Wednesday, our bakers make paczki because we are going to fast for 40 days and we want to use up the ingredients in our households. Our German neighbors to the west call them Berliners and our Austrian friends to the south celebrate with Krapfen. What is a Paczki?

In Polish culture, Pączki Day (Punch-key) is a once-a-year event and is only celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. People will ask for pączkis not realizing that pączki is already the plural of pączek (Punch-ek). Pączki are very rich donuts, deep fried and then filled with fruit or cream filling and covered with powdered sugar or icing.

Traditionally, Lent was 40 days of fasting; meaning one meal a day and full fasting on Friday. Any rich foods were not allowed. The Tuesday before lent, people of Poland used up food so that it would not be spoiled or wasted. Families would use up their eggs, butter and sugar and fruit by treating themselves one last time before Lent began with these rich donuts.

The Tradition

In the United States, Paczki Day was always popular in the Polish communities from the beginning of the 20th century. Polish immigrants settled in different parts of the U.S., such as Detroit, Baltimore, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Chicago, Buffalo and especially Hamtramck MI, where the Polish bakeries would have Pączki for sale on Fat Tuesday morning.

In smaller communities it was the local Polish Parish that came together to make and sell Pączki. Paczki can be found up to a month before Fat Tuesday in almost every food store. People just can’t pass up a delicious food holiday and Pączki Day can be considered one of the best. In Polish-heavy Midwestern cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Green Bay, and Chicago, Fat Tuesday is known as Paczki Day.

During the holiday, local bakeries sell tens of thousands of fresh pastries in the morning, with people lining up around the block to get them. There are also parades, eating contests and a lot of naps. Paczki are known to draw lines around the block this time of year. So what are you waiting for….go get in line so you can get yourself a Paczki!

  1. Bought barvarian and raspberry paczki as I always do. This year for some odd reason they hardly had any filling. I was lucky if a quarter size of filling was inserted. I am truly disappointed this year…can you help me out?

    • Hmm, that’s a shame Renee. No one wants to get jipped out of the filling! If you bought the paczki at a bakery I would tell them, and if you bought them through a company, I would bring it up to them:) Who knows, maybe you’ll get a free paczki! Lynn

    • I am from Michigan and staying in Florida. We always celebrate Fat Tuesday with paczki. Which I got at Publix from your company. The worst paczki ever! Hardly any filling and the dough is worst than a regular donut. I am Polish and know what a paczki should taste like!

        Sorry you didn’t like the Paczki that you purchased at Publix. Perhaps you could take them back and get a refund. I always purchase Paczki at a local Polish bakery in Pulaski WI. As far as your reference to “my company” I don’t understand what that refers too. I have never made or sold Paczki. Lynn

  2. I came back to this site to explain myself about above comment. I really didn’t mean to say that there is something wrong with this Pączki. They are perfectly fine and delicious. The only problem is that they don’t much the taste and look of the real ones and , accordingly to my experience, should be called differently.

  3. I am sorry, I don’t want to insult anybody, but did producers of “Pączki” eat ever real Pączki? This what I bought in the box with the name Pączki on it was never even lay down close to the real ones. As it is eatable please change the name on the package to Donuts.

      It’s nice to see you back again this year. I can tell that you are very passionate on this subject and I don’t wish to insult you. You obviously know more about Paczki than I do. Could you possibly point me in the right direction so that I am able to give the correct facts on Paczki? You could also write an article about Paczki and email me the article and I will try my best to explain what Paczki really is all about. Lynn
