Hawaiian BBQ Bratwurst Kabobs

Kabobs are great for grilling during the summertime and here on Turnips 2 Tangerines, we have embraced the ease and deliciousness of kabobs. This recipe proves that different ingredients can and will work well together. Here is the perfect example, this recipe combines bratwurst, pineapple chunks, green pepper, whole mushrooms, and onions to create a great and delicious tasting kabob.

In This Recipe

In this recipe, we lightly basted the kabobs with Sweet Baby Ray’s {New} Hawaiian-Style BBQ Sauce, during the last 10 minutes of grillin’ time. We love Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce! You can also make your own barbecue sauce simply by mixing together pineapple juice, spices, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, salt and pepper to taste. Recipe follows:)

Any Bratwurst or Sausage

In this recipe, you can substitute Italian sausage, Polish sausage, turkey sausage, kielbasa or your favorite type of sausage. We of course, went with the Wisconsin favorite, the Bratwurst! Here in Wisconsin you can find bratwurst in just about any ‘flavor’ you can think of. Bratwurst made with dried cranberries, wild rice, mushrooms, sauerkraut, blue cheese, jalapenos, black olives, and so on and so forth.

A super delicious Kabob!!

Course: Dinner, Main Course, Pork
Keyword: Bratwurst, fruit, Pork, vegetables
Servings: 4 servings
Ingredients
  • 6 wooden skewers, soaked in water, juice, white wine or beer for 4-6 hours or up to 24 hours
  • precooked bratwurst or smoked sausage of your choice
  • 4 limes cut in half or quarters
  • 1 large green pepper, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 medium sweet onion, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 8 oz package whole mushrooms, stems removed and wiped clean of any dirt
  • 1 16 oz can pineapple chunks, drained
  • 1 cup  Sweet Baby Ray's {New} Hawaiian-Style BBQ Sauce or make Easy Pineapple Barbecue Sauce. or make your own
Directions
  1. Slice each bratwurst into 3 or 4 pieces.
  2. Thread bratwurst, limes, green pepper, sweet onion, whole mushrooms and pineapple chunks on soaked wooden skewers in any order you want.
  3. For gas grills, simply set the grill burners to medium level, close the grill, and allow the grill to heat up. Rub surface of grill grate with vegetable oil using a grilling brush to prevent the kabobs from sticking. Place the kabobs on the grilling surface, leave space between each to ensure even cooking. Turn the kabobs during cooking to allow all sides to cook evenly.
  4. As a general rule, most kabobs will require approximately 16 minutes to cook, which is 4 minutes for each kabob on all 4 sides.
  5. Brush kabobs with BBQ sauce during last 10 minutes of grilling, or make and use Easy Pineapple Barbecue Sauce, recipe follows in blog post.

  6. Serve over cooked jasmine rice and pineapple chunks.
